AfroEcology Zine Issue 01 is Here

We are proud to release the first edition of the AfroEcology Zine, a love letter to the land and an invitation to begin healing our deep, ancestral connection to the earth.

This inaugural issue introduces a vision developed in collaboration with longtime sustainability advocate Desiree Williams-Rajee, whose leadership has helped guide this work. Together, we are exploring what it means to reconnect with the land in ways that are grounded in care, curiosity, and collective responsibility.

At Imagine Black Futures, we believe that to heal ourselves, we must heal our relationship to the land. What we do to the earth, we do to the people. When we restore the earth’s vitality, we restore the vitality of our communities. This work is not quick or easy. It is an ongoing journey that may extend beyond our lifetimes. This zine is an invitation to begin.

AfroEcology is both a framework and a practice. It calls on people of African descent to reclaim our place within the natural world and to restore the relationships that were disrupted by exploitation, displacement, and systems built on extraction. It reminds us that we are not separate from the earth. We are part of it.

Through this lens, we are working to move from an extractive, militarized, and exploitative economy toward one rooted in care, protection, and stewardship. AfroEcology is not just about saving the land. It is about reclaiming our role in caring for it and, in doing so, building a more just and regenerative future.

Inside this issue, you’ll find reflections, practices, and accessible ways to begin reconnecting with the land in your everyday life. From understanding our ecological relationships to simple actions like buying seasonal produce and supporting local farmers, this zine offers small, meaningful steps toward a larger transformation.

We are Black. We are resilient. And together, we will build a future where the earth thrives, and so do we.
